Lawyers in Victoria are bound by strict professional ethical codes of conduct set out in the Legal Profession Act 2004 (Vic). These obligations fall not only upon lawyers, but also upon staff at any level within a legal practice. These high standards provide protections and assurances to the community. It is a serious offence for a member of the public (or a non-lawyer) to engage in legal practice or to represent or advertise such an entitlement, when not entitled to do so (s. 2.2.2, LP Act).
